Beyond Self-Publishing
Publish Your Photobook with PH21 Centre for Photography Publisher of Award-Winning Photobooks

20260516_190628.jpg

Turn your photographic project into a professionally published book with the support of the PH21 editorial and curatorial team.

In a world of endless scrolling, a printed photobook remains a tangible object – one that can be held, revisited, and preserved. Much like a physical exhibition, it offers a different way of encountering images: slower, more intimate, and more enduring.

The PH21 Centre for Photography has years of experience in creating photobooks with artists from around the world. If you would like to give your portfolio or photographic series a new form and a lasting presence, we would be pleased to explore the possibilities with you.

Photographers are invited to submit photobook proposals for consideration by the PH21 Centre for Photography. Proposals should include a coherent portfolio of 30-60 images and an artist statement. Images should be submitted at 72 ppi and should not exceed 2 MB per file.

Submissions are accepted throughout the year. Please send your proposal via WeTransfer.com to ph21@centreforphotography.com.

The publishing process consists of two stages

1. Portfolio review and consultation:

  • Your submitted portfolio will be discussed with you during a 50-minute online consultation session with Zsolt Bátori and Borbála Jász, curators of the PH21 Gallery and Centre for Photography.

  • The curators will provide constructive critical feedback on your portfolio and assess whether the project is ready for publication or would benefit from further development or revision.

  • The fee for the 50-minute portfolio review and consultation session is €85.

2. Editing and publication:

  • Projects considered ready for publication will proceed to the editing and publishing stage.

Notes:

  • The number of photobooks published by the PH21 Centre for Photography is limited and subject to curatorial selection. The process is competitive, and participation in the portfolio review does not guarantee that a project will be accepted for publication. All curatorial decisions are final.

  • Projects requiring further development may be revised and resubmitted at a later date as a new proposal.

  • Projects considered ready for publication will be processed in the order in which they are submitted, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Editing and publishing fee

  • The standard editing and publishing fee for accepted proposals by the PH21 Centre for Photography (the publisher) is €1,900.

The standard editing and publishing fee includes

  • Professional curation of the photobook by the curators of the PH21 Gallery and Centre for Photography, Zsolt Bátori and Borbála Jász.

  • Print-on-demand publishing through Blurb’s print-on-demand service.

  • Design of the photobook to be published by the PH21 Centre for Photography.

  • A 200-250-word curatorial essay written by the curators, Zsolt Bátori and Borbála Jász.

  • The fee includes the curation of a photo book containing up to 40 images. The cost for additional images beyond the initial 40 is €20 per image.

  • The size and resolution of the selected images must conform to the specifications provided by the curators.

  • If the photographer prefers the publisher to size the images, an image-sizing fee of €8 per image will apply.

  • The photographer may submit up to three cover and design options, including fonts designed using Blurb’s BookWright application. This is optional and not required.

  • The curators will provide three initial design options and will discuss the final version with the photographer.

  • Removal of the Blurb logo from the book.

  • ISBN registration: provision of an official ISBN number for the book.

  • The standard format of the book is 10x8 inches (25x20 cm), landscape, unless the content requires a different format.

  • Paper and cover options (softcover or hardcover) will be discussed with the photographer.

  • Distribution options include Blurb.com or Amazon.com, depending on the photographer’s preference.

  • The profit from sales will be jointly determined by the photographer and the publisher and will be split equally between them.

  • €1,000 is due upon acceptance of the proposal. The remaining balance of the publishing fee is due when the book is published on Blurb.com.
