Stories: Narrative Photography
A curated international photography exhibition
May 6 – 26, 2021
While photography is popularly associated with capturing the moment, it has always been a sensitive medium of storytelling as well. Looking at a photograph may allow for understanding much about the past that has led up to the moment frozen in time; it may also enable the viewer to imagine the possible future unfolding of events that may evolve from the still record of the here and now. Photographers portraying people, objects, and places can tell us inspiring stories, provided we take the time to study and interpret the images. A narrative told in a single photograph is an exciting challenge for both photographer and viewer alike. Hopefully we appreciate these works with the care and curiosity they deserve.
Encouraged by the success of our previous Stories exhibitions, this year PH21 Gallery invites photographers again to submit their work for our annual group exhibition themed Stories: Narrative Photography. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who think that their work is telling a story and would like to share it with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed; it may be expressed visually on personal or social levels, literally or in abstract, symbolic ways. Stories can be told about persons, communities, objects, and places as well. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.
Submission deadlines:
Early bird deadline: March 1, 2021
Final deadline: March 8, 2021

Monochrome
A curated international photography exhibition
June 3 – 269, 2021
Monochrome photography is usually associated with black and white images. However, in the history of photography other hues, such as sepia and cyan were also used, and today there are countless examples of monochromatic images whose photographic qualities are based on the tonal range of various other colours. While monochromacity used to be a technological limitation for a long time, today it is more of an artistic choice. Photographers may opt for working with the shades of just one colour for compositional reasons or for reasons related to the expressive content of their images, and therefore their decision is to be interpreted. Our appreciation of contemporary monochromatic images is also rooted in the knowledge that the lack of colour range is significant and meaningful, not merely a technological limitation.
PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Monochrome. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who create black and white or other monochromatic images and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. We welcome submissions from all photographic genres, including abstract compositions. We are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.

Early bird deadline: March 29, 2021

Bodyscapes
A curated international photography exhibition
July 1 – July 24, 2021
The human body, in full or in part, is often in the focus of various photographic genres. From documentary, event and street photography to fashion photography and the nude, photographers have always found ways of constructing images in which the specific portrayal of the human body gains significance. This may be stemming from the rich layers of meanings determined and shaped by the specific socio-cultural context of the image, the visual interaction of the human body with the surrounding physical space, or the intriguing compositional possibilities offered by the body itself. When focussing on the body, some photographers explore movements, study expressive gestures and postures, or concentrate on the beauty and details of the human anatomy. Some narrate whole life stories through the depiction of the human body. Others may offer stern visual criticism of our normative conceptions of the human body and its mainstream representation in Western media.
PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Bodyscapes. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in this subject, and who would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed without any photographic genre restrictions. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme.

July 29 – August 18, 2021
PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a solo exhibition opportunity. Please submit a coherent portfolio that is suitable for a solo exhibition, an artist statement and a short bio. The portfolio should consist of at least 15 and at most 35 images. The submission may include one or two series, provided that the two series are suitable for a joint presentation in a single exhibition. There are no generic, stylistic or thematic constraints; photographers working in all photographic areas, genres and styles are welcome to submit their work.
-
The winner of this competition will be awarded a solo exhibition from July 29 – August 18, 2021.
-
PH21 Gallery will cover all printing and installation costs for the solo exhibition. In addition to the brick-and-mortar solo exhibition, the work of the winner will also be presented on a dedicated page of our website. The web page will include the artist statement and the bio of the photographer, together with the critical reviews by the curators.
-
Up to 10 other photographers will be offered the opportunity to present a mini-series of three photographs from their portfolio in the "Photographic Visions" group exhibition. Photographic Visions is a biannual exhibition at PH21 Gallery, showing mini-series of works of selected artists who submitted their portfolio for our solo exhibition competition. The Photographic Visions exhibition is also presented on a dedicated page on our website.
-
We will publish a catalogue for the solo exhibition and for the Photographic Visions exhibition as well. The catalogues (and the dedicated pages of the exhibitions on our website) will contain critical reviews by the curators of the exhibition. The exhibition catalogues will be available through Blurb Books.
