Artist statement
The “Housewife” series symbolically tackles gender identities, notably that of women in our societies. According to some stereotypes, women should stay at home, take care of the laundry or hold their tongues. This definition of women is surprisingly defended by our most renowned philosophers. That is why each picture is associated with a quote from a historically famous philosopher. The pictures do not only show the absurdity or even violence of some philosophical declarations: they also depict what it feels like to have one’s identity limited by an established and pseudo-rational stereotype.
This project is published in the book “Clichés de Femmes”, Atlande editions.
Biography
Julie de Waroquier is a self-taught French photographer, also philosophy teacher, who started photography in 2008. Since 2010, she has distinguished herself by winning several national and international awards, including the International Emerging Artist Award. Her photographs are regularly exhibited, and were notably showcased at the Rencontres d’Arles. She is represented by several art galleries, and she participates in many French and international art fairs and events.
Her work has been worldwide published, and in the end of 2012, she has published her first book "Dreamalities", which is edited by KnowWare editions. In 2014, this book is adapted as a short film, in collaboration with the film-maker and director Damien Steck. The film has been awarded in several international festivals. In 2019, she has published "Clichés de femmes" with Atlande editions. The book associates sexist quotes from the most famous philosophers with ironical and dreamy pictures, to question and mock the quoted words.
She also regularly works for famous brands or cultural campaigns. She has given conferences for Nikon and has been chosen as an ambassador for Adobe in 2017. She is an author for the French magazine CompétencePhoto and occasionally writes papers for other photography magazines.

Artist statement
Dan Gemkow: Re-Altered Landscapes
This project addresses the systematic construction of the American suburban landscape. The cost-effective model of neighborhood development creates a uniform environment and establishes comparable way of life. Large portions of imagery in my photographs are removed in order to eliminate the standardized arrangement of residential locations. The resulting exposures achieve a nebulous space with only few representational cues to provide situational context.
I use ordinary suburban fixtures such as street signs, plastic fencing and molded concrete to abstract the uniform design of inhabited areas. These components of the suburbs are so commonplace they begin to appear as part of the natural landscape. In my work, these items become found object filters used to see the built environment through the built environment. This work requires no use of post-exposure manipulation; the abstractions are all accomplished in camera.
By working this way, the viewer is allowed the opportunity to mentally explore the possibilities of how to reconstruct the fragmented details in the pictured environment. Ultimately, one must imagine how to piece the abstracted information together in order to make sense of the photograph. Challenging contemplation of the suburban landscape through this creative process invites the opportunity for a thoughtful evaluation of the area. Ironically, the viewer must use their imagination to understand an area that is designed without any creative consideration.
Biography
Dan Gemkow is a photographer who lives and works in Chicago. He is originally from New Hampshire and grew up in the suburban Chicago area. He received a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Missouri. Since completion of his MFA, Gemkow has traveled through four countries on intercity buses to develop two bodies of work involving bus travel.
Gemkow’s photographs have been exhibited in several galleries and museums including the Newspace Center for Photography in Portland, the Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, FotoFilmic PULP Gallery Bowen Island, B.C., the Los Angeles Center of Photography, the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado, the Kaunas Photo Festival in Kaunas, Lithuania, PH21 Gallery in Budapest, Hungary, Rogue Space Chelsea in New York City, the Masur Museum of Art in Louisiana, the New Hampshire Institute of Art, the Foundry Art Center in St. Charles, Missouri, the Kevin Milligan Gallery in the Bay Area of California, the Black Box Gallery in Oregon, the PhotoPlace Gallery in Vermont, the Midwest Center for Photography in Kansas, the Tubac Center for the Arts in Arizona, several galleries around the Midwest and Gallery MM in Yokohama, Japan.

Dongwook Lee: Sense Of Guilt
The brutality of human nature depicted as distorted love of Bobby and Ken.
There have been numerous controversies about Barbie dolls due to their inborn duplicity and abnormal figure. Despite these criticisms, Barbie dolls are still an idol for many children and adult. It has been a long time since the appearance of the black Barbie dolls, after lots of disputes, but there is still discrimination between white and black Barbie dolls like in the real world. People’s dual aspect and mentality towards Barbie dolls became the motive for choosing Barbie dolls as a main material for my work.
Those like the fleeting moment before a traffic accident, a murder, or voyeurism actually do exist, but to most people are lucky enough not to experience any of these. These are just some other people’s business. Depending on the viewer’s subconsciousness and experience, a piece of photo can evoke completely different kinds of inspirations.
I constructed familiar situations that look like a real world where Barbie dolls actually live. I express the brutality of human nature with the distorted love of Bobby and Ken.
