The material nature of photographic subjects might be considered trivial, given the very nature of photography itself. There are, however, images whose photographic meaning emerges from the way the photographer approaches the materiality of objects, such as glass, metal, concrete, wooden, plastic, and all the other natural and artificial materials. Masters of photography often studied the texture, form and other physical qualities of objects with respect to their capacity to enrich the composition and the communicative photographic content of images. From architectural photography to still life, from portraits to experimental photographic images and abstract photography, qualities of the subject’s material often gain significance to be noticed and interpreted by the viewer.
